project description
This project serves as the first installment in a proposed series of infographic booklets that seek to illustrate the lasting impact of the Canadian residential school system through the personal narratives of its survivors. One of the essential components of reconciliation, according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, is an acknowledgment of the past and recognition of the harm inflicted. With this in mind, the purpose of this project is to promote reconciliation by increasing awareness of the reality of what occurred at the Tk'emlúps residential school, as narrated by its survivors.
The booklet features three firsthand accounts, each of which provides insight into the traumatic and dreadful experiences endured by those within the residential school system. Throughout the booklet, the use of pull quotes draws attention to and emphasizes the survivors' horrific and heartrending experiences. Additionally, the booklet contains half pages interspersed throughout, which provide an analysis of the long-term implications and true intentions behind the Canadian government's nefarious objectives in implementing the residential school system. Moreover, vellum is used to visualize the government's efforts to conceal the actual number of children who died at the Tk'emlúps residential school. Survivors' accounts have been abridged from “Behind Closed Doors: Stories from the Kamloops Indian Residential School.”
